Ex-LSU CB Mathieu considering McNeese State

Former LSU cornerback and 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu, who was booted from the team Friday, might enroll at McNeese State, according to Rob Rang of nfldraftscout.com.

LSU kicker Josh Jasper tweeted that Mathieu already transferred to McNeese State, but even though Mathieu visited the school, he did not commit.

"It's very important for both us and Tyrann to make the right decision and Tyrann agreed," McNeese State coach Matt Viator told GeauxNation. "It was a long day. We both needed to back off a bit and make the best decision. Especially him. He needs to catch his breath and make sure he makes the right decision."

Since McNeese State is an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision school, he could play right away. If Mathieu transfers to an NCAA Div. I Football Bowl Subdivision school, he would have to sit out a year.

Mathieu is also considering Jackson State and Prairie View A&M, but ruled out Southern because he wants to leave Baton Rouge, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The junior was dismissed from the team for violating team rules, but several media outlets reported that he violated the school's substance abuse policy several times. Mathieu was suspended for a game last season for failing a drug test, and was undergoing counseling.

He won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's best defensive player after helping the Tigers win the SEC championship and reach the BCS title game against Alabama. LSU lost 21-0.

LSU is ranked No. 1 in the USA Today coaches' poll.
