With Ethier injured, Dodgers add outfielders

The Los Angeles Dodgers summoned two outfielders Saturday to bolster depth as Andre Ethier deals with a bothersome left ankle, ESPN reported.

Triple-A players Nick Buss and Alex Castellanos join a shorthanded outfield that includes Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford and Scott Van Slyke, plus utility players Skip Schumaker and Jerry Hairston Jr.

Manager Don Mattingly said the team would rest Ethier, who has the equivalent of shin splints on the outside of his left ankle. Tests ruled out structural damage, ESPN reported.

Ethier was injured while taking a swing against the Colorado Rockies earlier this month. He aggravated it Friday after hitting a double in the eighth inning. Mattingly said running the bases irritates the ankle.

"That cut is what's making him sore," he said, per ESPN. "Straight on (running) is not bothering him."

Buss, 26, led the Pacific Coast League with 100 RBI this season, hitting .303 with 17 homers, 29 doubles and 21 stolen bases in 131 games at Albuquerque.

Castellanos, 27, was 2-for-9 in an earlier stint with the Dodgers this season. He hit .257 with 19 homers and 69 RBI at Albuquerque.
