ESPN to avoid references to violence in wake of tragedy

The SportsXchange

ESPN refrained from calling the Nevada offense the "Pistol" as it is widely known as part of a company-wide decree to avoid mentions of weaponry and acts of violence in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., tragedy Friday.

ESPN senior vice president and executive producer Mark Gross sent an e-mail to staff Friday regarding the shootings in Newtown, Conn. The e-mail detailed the policy that is in effect throughout Saturday.

Employees were also told not to tweet anything sports related until noon ET Sunday.

ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Conn., are 30 miles from Newtown.
