New England Revolution 1-2 Houston Dynamo: Moffat deadly from distance in vital win

The Houston Dynamo took an important 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium, putting daylight between two sides scrapping over the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot.

The game had to wait until after halftime to see its first goal, but Adam Moffat's 49th minute strike was worth the delay. Houston's corner seemed competently cleared by Chad Barrett, but Moffat met it as it fell and launched a perfect volley from 30 yards past Bobby Shuttleworth.

New England wouldn't allow the visitors' lead to stand for long. After a few futile stabs from Lee Nguyen and Diego Fagundez towards the Dynamo penalty area, Fagundez beat Andrew Driver on the outside and crossed at the endline. Tally Hall did get a hand to it, but he only pushed it to Saer Sene, who finished from close range to equalize.

Moffat's long-range skills surfaced again in the 79th minute. It went down as an own goal, but Moffat's shot from outside the area beat Shuttleworth, bounced off the post, hit Shuttleworth's back, and went in the goal to make it 2-1.

New England's task was made more difficult shortly after, when substitute Dimitry Imbongo was shown a straight red card for throwing an elbow in Eric Brunner's dace during a physical tussle between the players.

The win is Houston's second in a row, and gives the Dynamo a five-point cushion in the playoff race.
