Elon tops Georgia Southern 55-50 in SoCon opener

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- Lucas Troutman netted 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting as Elon topped Georgia Southern 55-50 Wednesday in each teams' Southern Conference opener.

Elon (5-2, 1-0) has now won five of its past six games.

Troutman also pulled down five rebounds and had four steals. Jack Isenbarger backed him with 12 points and four assists.

Georgia Southern (2-4, 0-1) got 16 points from Tre Bussey, 13 from C.J. Reed and 10 points and 11 rebounds from Eric Ferguson.

The Phoenix led 32-26 at halftime then used a 12-0 run that spanned nearly 9 minutes in the second half to take a 49-34 lead with 5:58 left.

The Eagles responded with a 16-4 run and cut the lead to 53-50 with 40 seconds left on a free throw by Ferguson, but got no closer. Isenbarger iced the win with two free throws with 7 seconds left.
