Eagles release receiver Jason Avant
The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran wide receiver Jason Avant, the organizastion announced on Tuesday.
Avant was set to count $3.9 million against the Eagles' cap, and this moves provides some immediate savings. Avant will become an unrestricted free agent.
The Eagles had their priorities at the receiver position and it was evident Avant was not one of them. Riley Cooper was signed to a new contract and Jeremy Maclin, who sat out the 2013 season with an ACL injury, signed a one-year deal.
Avant built a reputation in Philadelphia as a locker room leader with sure hands on the football field.
The Eagles drafted Avant out of Michigan in the 2006 NFL draft in the fourth round.
"There have not been any players who've represented the Eagles with more class and dignity than Jason Avant," Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement. "In the locker room, on the field or in the community, Avant has always been a true professional, role model and winner. On behalf of the entire organization, I wish Jason, Stacy and their two daughters the best as he continues his fine career."
