Eagles hire Chip Kelly as head coach

Chip Kelly has changed his mind and was named the new head coach of the Eagles on Wednesday.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen first reported on Wednesday that Kelly will be the Eagles’ coach, 10 days after Kelly decided to return to Oregon. The Eagles later confirmed the hiring.

“Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles,” said owner Jeffrey Lurie. “He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh, energetic approach to our team.”

Kelly interviewed with the Bills and Browns, in addition to the Eagles, and Philadelphia appeared to be his first choice. Kelly met with the Eagles for almost nine hours before choosing to remain at Oregon, but Kelly "continued to evaluate the opportunity to work for the Eagles in the NFL," per the team's website. Last year, Kelly almost became the head coach of the Buccaneers before deciding to stay in the college ranks.

At Oregon, Kelly had a record of 46-7 and won the Fiesta Bowl earlier this month. Kelly replaces Andy Reid, who spent 14 seasons with the Eagles and was fired on Dec. 31 following a 4-12 season.
