Recommendation: Pedroia took a couple of rounds of batting practice Saturday while wearing a molded plastic brace under his batting glove to protect the torn adductor muscle at the base of his thumb. We'll be looking to see how the thumb responds to taking so many swings, something with which manager Bobby Valentine is concerned. Valentine also wants to see how he responds when jammed with a pitch on the hands, a situation which causes the bat to vibrate with more intensity against the thumb. Pedroia, on the other hand, feels "like I'm ready to go."
Update: Pedroia (thumb) will take batting practice Sunday and Monday as the Red Sox prepare for him to be in their lineup Tuesday, the Boston Globe reports.
