DT Okoye leaves Bears for Bucs

The SportsXchange

Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye agreed to a one-year deal with Tampa Bay.

The Bucs had been looking to bolster their interior depth and reportedly had interest in Derek Landri, who re-signed with the Eagles on Monday.

A former first-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2007, Okoye was solid in a rotational role for the Bears in 2011, registering 27 tackles and four sacks while appearing in all 16 games and playing in more than half of the team's defensive snaps.

He received interest in free agency from the Bucs, Bengals, Broncos and Patriots, in part because he's a sixth-year veteran who is just 25. The Nigerian-American entered the NFL when he was just 19 after enrolling at Louisville when he was only 15.

Okoye's departure leaves the Bears in need of depth along their defensive interior. While Stephen Paea emerged during the second half of his rookie season, Anthony Adams was released last month.
