The Football Factory at Legends in New York City (6 West 33rd Street) is no stranger when it comes to hosting soccer-related events. It is a second home of sorts for over two dozen local supporters clubs, and the establishment also houses a soccer museum that continues to grow. A different collection of fans will be flocking to Football Factory later on this month for an event that is becoming a yearly pre-Super Bowl tradition.
"Drunk FIFA" will make its highly anticipated return to Football Factory on Friday, January 25, 2013. As you may have guessed by the title of the event, the evening will largely be about patrons playing FIFA 13 while also enjoying multiple alcoholic beverages. What it won't be, however, is a bunch of dudes merely playing some video games while downing beers. "Drunk FIFA" is a serious competition that includes serious money and serious prizes.
Those who pay the $50 fee to enter the "Drunk FIFA" tournament will be playing for a variety of prizes. A grand prize of $400 goes to the winner, while the runner-up will take home $150. There will also be assorted non-cash prizes, such as soccer jerseys and tickets to local professional sporting events, awarded throughout the evening. Even those who are used to playing their video games at the "Novice" level could leave Football Factory a winner.
Be prepared for a marathon if you want to win the big money prize. An expected total of 128 people will be vying for the crown on January 25. Anybody interested in participating would also do well to remember that the "Drunk FIFA" name isn't a gimmick. There are rules that must be obeyed during the tournament, such as having a drink at the start of both halves of a game, and drinking for ten seconds if a goal is scored while outside of the box. Don't think about being sneaky regarding your drinking, as "judges" will be monitoring players to make sure the proper amount of drinks are consumed during tournament games.
Think that your FIFA 13 skills aren't good enough to spend the $50 to enter the competition? No worries, as that money also includes a four-hour open bar. Everybody who pays, even those eliminated in the opening round, will get their money's worth. All who attend the event will also be given a free bottle of EON, a drink that was designed to prevent hangovers.
The hope, according to Football Factory's Marketing and Social Media Manager Robert Kennerney, is that these "Drunk FIFA" events will become a monthly tradition at the pub. "I'm hoping this tournament in January will launch something that will continue to be a success throughout the year," Kennerney explained to me. "Despite the number of different supporters clubs we have here on a weekly basis, it was our 'Drunk FIFA' tournaments where friendships were really made and where the sense of community at the Football Factory really started to grow. The main goal for our bar is to bring soccer fans from all different backgrounds together, and it appears that people's self-confidence in their FIFA ability is the true ultimate equalizer."
Kennerney also told me that the upcoming edition of "Drunk FIFA" will take place on the main floor and not the lower level of the bar due to the overall size of the tournament and also because of what will likely be a significant crowd of spectators. Players are asked to register for and RSVP to the event via its official Facebook page. You must be at least 21-years old to enter and participate.
