Packers WR Driver retires after 14 seasons

There certainly seems to be a wide range of opinions on the Packers’ increasingly intriguing situation at wide receiver in the wake of beloved veteran WR Donald Driver’s contract adjustment in late May that will reportedly pay him about $2.3 million a year.

Driver’s “rock-star” aura in early camp activities, undeniably enhanced by his fancy first-place footwork in the most recent season of “Dancing with the Stars,” would seem to suggest he still will be expected to be a key cog in one of the league’s most loaded WR corps, most likely as a third-down receiver.

But team sources tell us that the growing dilemma of providing enough opportunities for both Driver and the very talented — and considerably younger — trio of Randall Cobb, Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel could still put Driver squarely on the bubble once final roster cutdowns have to be made.

By all accounts, Cobb, who made more of an immediate mark as a kick returner but still displayed some electric flashes at wide receiver, has been one of the most impressive all-around performers up to now and is a virtual lock to fill an expanded WR role. Also up to now, Gurley, who has TE-type size, has been tabbed by most observers as a more likely contributor in the short-term than the much shorter Borel, who in a lot of ways resembles Cobb. But team insiders tell us that, while Cobb generated a lot more buzz, Borel might have shown the biggest improvement in early camp work, showing off a stronger body while looking much more aggressive and confident catching the ball.

While Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Cobb appear virtually assured of roster spots, we hear the verdict very much remains out on Driver, Gurley and the hard-charging Borel.
