New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is in the final year of his contract, and although it’s almost a certainty he’ll finish his career in black and gold, there have been some bumps along the way.

And it may not get better. Brees reportedly said that he has no plans to negotiate a contract during the 2016 season, per ESPN’s Mike Triplett. So in a way, it’s good news in the sense he doesn’t want it to distract the team during the season. But on the other end, it’s time for the sides to really strike a deal before the season starts.

Sometimes the impossible can happen, and a player could spurn his team and go elsewhere. We have seen it before, but it almost definitely will not happen with Brees and the Saints. But it’s hard to believe this has dragged on: He deserves to be paid nicely, and has been willing to restructure his deal many times.

Obviously, it’s not as though Brees is being too selfish and asking for too much money. He was willing to take a pay cut for the team to sign Josh Norman. So perhaps it’s the front office that’s holding this deal back.

Whatever it is, both sides need to put an end to it soon. Brees is now 37 and is running out of time to deliver another championship to New Orleans. The last thing they need is something with an easy solution to distract the team.

Both sides need to hit the front desk and sign a deal. It’s long overdue.
