Douglas Lima Has Sights on Ben Saunders… Then the Bellator Welterweight Crown

When it comes to Friday’s rematch with Ben Saunders at Bellator 100, former MFC welterweight champion Douglas Lima feels the outcome will be the same as their first bout back in November 2011.

“I think I’m going to get a finish again,” said Lima. “I’m actually feeling better than last time, so I’m hoping for the finish in less time, and I’m going to win the fight again.”

The similarities don’t end there. Like their previous bout, this one will also be a welterweight tournament final, which only adds to Lima’s anticipation.

“It’s no pressure. It’s just motivation,” he said. “It’s a big opportunity and since it’s Bellator 100, it’s a very important event. It’s very exciting and I cannot wait to fight.”

Lima (24-5) told MMAWeekly.com that he doesn’t see a need to change his strategy, even if Saunders (16-5-2) changes his, because he will be ready regardless of where the fight goes.

“I think it’s going to stay the same, but it depends on what his game plan is; if (Saunders is) going to try to take me down or strike,” said Lima. “It doesn’t matter where it goes; I’m going to be ready for it.

“The game plan for me is the same, strike, or if I end up on top on the ground, I’ll take that as well. I’m just prepared for everything.”

Unlike their first bout, the winner of Friday’s match-up may not get a shot at current Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren, as he is currently a restricted free agent.

For Lima, a rematch with Askren would be something he’d want, but if he doesn’t get it, he’ll gladly fight anyone for the title.

“I don’t know if Ben is going to stay with Bellator or leave, so I’m just focused on winning this fight and then next the title. It doesn’t matter who it is,” said Lima.

“If it’s Ben or the winner of the next tournament that’s what I’m thinking about the most right now, becoming champion of this organization.”

Not only is his own success something that Lima aspires to, but keeping up with his brother Dhiego and keeping the family moving forward is also a big part of the equation.

“We train together and help each other out a lot,” said Douglas. “We’re both working hard and preparing to take our careers to the next level.

“It’s definitely a lot easier (when we’re both doing well). I’m happy when we’re both doing the same thing. We help each other grow. It’s great to have a brother close to the same age and weight to train together with.”
