In an interesting article by Rick Stroud that appeared in the Tampa Bay Times on July 22, Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen, so I've bumped rookie running back Doug Martin up on my fantasy football draft rankings. I suggest you do the same.
Blount apparently can't get to work on time. It's really quite incredible. Stroud reports that during his first two weeks with the Buccaneers in 2010, Blount never showed up on time, racking up $15,000 in fines. So the Bucs hired a car service to pick him up and transport him less than 3 miles to work.
After a few weeks, they canceled the car service for one day, and Blount was late again. The car service was then used for the entire 2011 season.
Even when Blount finally made it to work, he couldn't stay awake. Stroud reports that he repeatedly arrived unprepared and fell asleep in team meetings.
When he eventually made it on to the field, Blount continued dropping the ball--quite literally--fumbling nine times in 2 years and losing six of them.
Now instead of Raheem Morris, hard-nosed disciplinarian Greg Schiano is the head coach in Tampa Bay. This kind of nonsense isn't going to fly with Schiano.
Martin's already being selected in the 6th round of Yahoo! fantasy football drafts while Blount is going late in the 13th round, so fantasy football managers clearly have little faith in Blount already. You can virtually guarantee that Schiano is not going to provide Blount with a car service so that he can show up on time, and the lack of preparation, the sleeping in meetings, and the fumbling is all going to get real old real fast.
It might be prudent to bump Martin up a few notches on your fantasy football draft list now that Blount's work habits have come to light. Martin's chances of being the Bucs' starting running back just increased significantly.
