Dose: St. Louis Magic

A ton of observations in Friday's Hockey Dose, including compelling evidence that the Rangers are legit

Congratulations go out to Martin St. Louis who reached the 1,000 point mark on Friday as he knocked in a rebound to get to the magic mark.

St. Louis was undrafted as his diminutive size worked against him, went to the University of Vermont for four seasons before the Calgary Flames gave him a chance. He played 69 games over two seasons, scoring three times while adding 17 assists. He was let go by the Flames and signed as an unrestricted free agent by Tampa Bay in the 2000-01 season where his career took off. He had some big years in Tampa Bay, scoring 43 goals and adding 59 assists in the 2006-07 season, but he also had three more years with 94-plus points and two more with at least 80, to get him to Friday afternoon’s game.

Once again, congratulations are in order to St. Louis who became the 81st player to hit the lofty total.

The Blackhawks got two goals from Patrick Kane and a goal and an assist out of Brad Richards and outplayed the Ducks to a tune of 4-1 as they outshot Anaheim 38-24.

Frederik Andersen was solid in net, giving up three goals on 37 shots although he did look weak on Richards goal which gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. Andrew Shaw gave the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead with his fifth of the season while Hampus Lindholm cut the lead in half before the end of the first as he tipped in a Patrick Maroon shot.

CAROLINA 4 PITTSBURGH 2

Jiri Tlusty opened the scoring and closed it with an empty netter as the Hurricanes went into Pittsburgh and came out with a 4-2 win.

Pittsburgh went into this game as a big favorite so you would assume that the Penguins outshot the Hurricanes and that Cam Ward was forced to stand on his head for the win. But you would be wrong. The visiting Hurricanes outshot Pittsburgh 35-22 as Marc-Andre Fleury kept the Penguins in the game until the empty netter with 13 seconds left.

Nathan Gerbe and Patrick Dwyer also scored for Carolina while Kris Letang and Patric Hornqvist replied for Pittsburgh.

Evgeni Malkin saw some time on the first line with Hornqvist and Sidney Crosby as coach Mike Johnston tried something new in the third period to get the Penguins going. It remains to be seen if this will continue on the weekend or if Chris Kunitz or Nick Spaling will play with Crosby and Hornqvist.

Marcel Goc injured his foot in the first period and did not return as he could be out a while. Riley Nash left the game late in the third period but there is no word on his condition.

BOSTON 2 WINNIPEG 1 (Overtime)

Dougie Hamilton scored the winner with only 1:21 left in overtime to lead the Bruins to a 2-1 win over the Jets.

Hamilton also picked up an assist on Milan Lucic’s goal as the Bruins tied it up in the third after Dustin Byfuglien scored a power play goal in the first to give the Jets the lead.

Tuukka Rask stopped 35-of-36 for the win, his 11th of the season while Michael Hutchinson was the hard luck loser as he stopped 36-of-38 shots.

Bryan Little was injured early in the third period after blocking a Carl Soderberg shot and did not return.

BUFFALO 2 MONTREAL 1

Matt Moulson scored a rare power play goal for the Sabres with only 1:18 left in the third period to lead Buffalo to a 2-1 win over Montreal.

It was only the Sabres fifth power play goal this season as they have had 68 chances. Tyler Ennis scored his seventh of the season in what may be the goal of the year, to open the scoring with P. A. Parenteau replying for the Canadiens in the second stanza to tie it up.

Jhonas Enroth was outstanding in stopping 30 shots for his fourth win of the season while Carey Price turned aside 23 shots in the loss.

Drew Stafford suffered a lower body injury in the first period and was unable to continue once the second period began.

DETROIT 5 NEW JERSEY 4 (Shootout)

In a wild game, the Detroit Red Wings fought back from a 4-1 deficit early in the second period to tie the game on Drew Miller’s third period goal and then won it in the shootout as Gustav Nyqvist was the only player to score as the Red Wings defeated New Jersey 5-4.

Riley Sheahan on the power play, Xavier Ouellet with his first and Justin Abdelkader on the power play as well, scored for the Red Wings while Jaromir Jagr, Peter Harrold (with his first) and Michael Cammalleri with two, scored for the Devils.

Petr Mrazek got the win with 21 saves, while Corey Schneider played in his 22nd game of the season and gave up four goals on 32 shots heading into the overtime.

Adam Henrique suffered an undisclosed injury and did not return for the third period while Travis Zajac also suffered an undisclosed injury and played four third period shifts before calling it a night.

VANCOUVER 5 COLUMBUS 0

Ryan Miller picked his second straight shutout to lead the Canucks to a 5-0 whitewash of the Columbus Blue Jackets. The loss plummeted the Blue Jackets into 30th and last place in the NHL standings.

Christopher Higgins and Brad Richardson led the way with a goal and an assist apiece while former Duck Nick Bonino had three assists. Alex Burrows, Shawn Matthias and Henri Sedin finished the scoring.

Miller made 31 saves to pick up his 15th win of the season. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 25 of 29 as the Blue Jackets also gave up a shorthanded goal.

FLORIDA 3 OTTAWA 2

The Panthers scored twice in the third to defeat the Senators as Ottawa came into the third period with a 2-1 lead.

Jimmy Hay picked up the winner while Sean Bergenheim also scored in the third. Dylan Olsen with his first of the season in the first period, also scored.

Al Montoya got the start for the Panthers as Roberto Luongo was injured Wednesday. Montoya stopped 22-of-24 shots for the victory.

Craig Anderson was forced to make 43 save as the Panthers were all over the Senators but he could not hold the fort in taking the loss. Chris Neil had a goal and an assist for the visitors, as well as a fight for the Gordie Howe hat trick while Codi Ceci potted his first of the season.

T.J. Oshie opened the scored with his second of the season and also chipped in with assists on goals by defensemen Kevin Shattenkirk and Alex Pietrangelo who each picked up their second of the season.

For the lowly Oilers who made Justin Schultz a healthy scratch for the first time this season, David Perron, Nikita Nikitin and Mark Arcobello scored.

Jake Allen made only 13 saves but picked up his seventh win of the season while Ben Scrivens stopped 37-of-41 but it wasn’t enough to give the Oilers a rare win.

MINNESOTA 5 DALLAS 4 (Overtime)

The latest game of the night also went into overtime as the Wild needed a goal by Marco Scandella, 2:04 into the extra frame to defeat the Stars.

Nino Niederreiter , Jason Zucker and Mikael Granlund gave the Wild an early 3-0 lead before Dallas poured it on with four straight to take the lead.

Ales Hemsky, with his first of the season, got things started while Tyler Seguin, Erik Cole and Alex Goligoski (also with his first) gave the Stars a 4-3 lead. Jyrki Jokipakka picked up his first two assists of his NHL career for Dallas.

A lot was expected of Thomas Vanek this season and he finally put in his second of the season with less than two minutes to go to send the game into overtime. Vanek also picked up a couple of assists and now has 14 points.

Darcy Kuemper stopped 41 shots for his 10th win of the season while Kari Lehtonen was less than stellar, giving up five on just 34 shots to get the overtime tie.
