Dose: Post-Deadline Oddness

Have you ever had an all-nighter or something close? In those cases, I usually hit the wall the day after a marathon session instead of it being a day-of thing. This is my long way of noting that my brain is a little bruised from the trade deadline, and with 10 games on the docket, I don’t think anyone really wants a long preamble, anyway …

LEAFS 3, PANTHERS 2

-- Really weird game here. Roberto Luongo stopped all 19 shots, yet was hurt by a first-period shot. He left and was even in street clothes when it was clear that Al Montoya was too hurt to keep playing in the third period. A goalie coach was very close to playing, but Luongo came back in the third.

Yeah, it was weird.

-- Aaron Ekblad's 11 goals sets a new mark for a Panthers rookie defenseman. That's really a fancy way of saying 'he's been even better than Ed Jovanovski."

-- Hard to tell what the future exactly holds for Jonathan Bernier, although not being traded says something. Either way, he's back to 19-19-5 after winning three of his last four games. His last two wins: 40 out of 42 saves last night and 47 out of 49 stops on Feb. 26. The guy can play.

-- Really warming up to Jaromir Jagr in a warmer climate. Not great to see a solid partner in Nick Bjugstad took a puck up high, but we’ll see.

CAPITALS 5, BLUE JACKETS 3

-- Alex Ovechkin might just drain the drama from the Maurice Richard run. He added two more goals, pushing him to 43 on the season. Ovechkin had eight SOG as well. He's clearly on fire, and Nicklas Backstrom (two assists to push that specific total to 49) is right there with him.

-- Scott Hartnell had a fantastic game: two goals, one assist, six SOG, two hits and four PIM. Even with the -12, he's back to being what we were hoping for: 43 points and 88 PIM.

-- Beastly game from Tom Wilson: one goal, +1, 17 PIM. Say what you will about David Clarkson, too, but he got 12 more PIM. He also suffered an upper-body injury, though.

-- Braden Holtby improved to 31-15-9 on the season. He could make himself some serious money this summer, assuming he doesn't get extended before that.

SHARKS 6, CANUCKS 2

-- Jacob Markstrom was supposed to be a big deal. Now it's getting pretty awkward as he's starting to lean toward Anders Lindbackville. He was pulled after allowing three goals on four shots in 7:45 TOI. Yikes, just yikes.

-- Good news: With Zack Kassian out dealing with the flu, Radim Vrbata went back with the Sedins and got an assist. The bad news is that he matched Henrik's -3 rating.

-- Nice game for an old wife-of-the-author favorite, Matt Nieto, who scored two goals and one assist.

-- Antti Niemi broke his three-game losing streak, improving his season record to 25-17-7 in 2014-15. Mixed results ... kind of Niemi story, even stretching back to his Stanley Cup winning run.

-- Henrik Sedin became the first Canuck to score 900 points and added number 901 for good measure.

DEVILS 3, PREDATORS 1

-- Let me ask again: is it time to get worried about the Predators? They've now lost four games in a row and six of eight, largely against East teams. The positive spin is that they generated more SOG than New Jersey even though they played on Monday night.

-- Could not help but giggle at seeing multiple mentions of Adam Larsson setting a new career-high ... with his third goal. Just seems like an odd thing to get too excited about, right?

Regardless, Larsson has 15 points in 25 games in 2015 after only generating four in his first 21 contests. Promising stuff for a guy who might have been leaving some people a little impatient.

-- Scott Gomez the last few years:

2011-12: 11 points in 38 games; 2012-13: 15 points in 39 games; 2013-14: 12 points in 46 games. This season? He generated 24 points in 40 so far. Nothing astronomical, but a nice improvement.

-- Remarkable run for Mike Cammalleri: six goals and three assists for nine points in his last seven games.

FLAMES 3, FLYERS 2 (OT)

-- Pretty impressive by Calgary's top line. Sean Monahan scored his 22nd goal of the season. Jiri Hudler's OT GWG pushed him to 20. Johnny Gaudreau didn't score a goal, but he got his 30th assist, yet he has 15 on the season. Special start. I wonder how long they'll stay together?

-- Mark Streit scored his ninth goal of the season and now has 41 points in 64 games, so it looks like he'll blow away last season's very solid 10 goals and 44 points. He's honestly been underrated in some quarters.

-- Philly handily outshot Calgary with 37-26. Karri Ramo was the difference-maker, stopping 35 out of those 37 shots.

-- Steve Mason is right down the middle to start since returning from injury: 1-1-1.

LIGHTNING 3, SABRES 0

-- I wonder how many people missed out on Andrei Vasilevskiy's shutout since it seemed to surface so abruptly? There's some mixed information on Ben Bishop possibly being injured during warm-ups. Stay tuned on that account.

-- Steve Stamkos now has 36 goals, including a three-game run (four in that span). This marked his fifth game-winner.

-- Braydon Coburn's fight gave him seven PIM in 16:29 TOI for his first game with the Lightning. It doesn't seem likely that he'll be much more than cheap daily fantasy fodder, but that's OK.

-- Nice to see Cody Hodgson show some nice moves considering how soul-crushing this season has been for him. I'm really curious to see how the next year or two play out for Hodgson.

-- Really, allowing three goals is probably a pleasant night for Anders Lindback in Buffalo. He might be the "perfect" guy for this tank job.

WILD 3, SENATORS 2 (SO)

-- OK, it was just a shootout win, so this takes some of the starch out of the storyline of Devan Dubnyk edging Andrew Hammond in a battle of goalies on hot streaks.

-- Chris Stewart bounced around a bit, but he got a primary assist on Matt Dumba's second goal of the night, so not half bad.

-- Bobby Ryan scored a goal and an assist and nailed his shootout attempt. The latter doesn't count for fantasy, but it's still kind of cool, right?

STARS 3, ISLANDERS 2 (OT)

-- Matt Martin was ejected for a kneeing hit on Trevor Daley, who could be sidelined for "weeks" from the resulting leg injury. I feel like NHL teams should discourage players from trying to skate off when they're hurt, even if that didn't necessarily worsen his condition.

-- Nice finish on the OT GWG by Cody Eakin, but I'd argue Jamie Benn's pass was even better. Then again, the best contributor from a Benn brother came when Jordie Benn looked dumbstruck by Anders Lee's game-tying goal going off of him with less than two seconds left in the third period.

(Seriously, Jordie owes his brother a free noogie, at minimum.)

-- Could this be a confidence builder for Kari Lehtonen? He stopped 35 out of 37 shots in the win, with some being pretty tough saves. While his numbers are rarely spectacular, he hasn't been at a .906 save percentage (or below .911) since 2005-06, and that was only 38 games.

DUCKS 4, COYOTES 1

-- Great return for Frederik Andersen: 29 out of 30 saves to improve his record to an impressive 30-8-5 mark. We can worry about John Gibson at least a bit less now.

-- Tomas Fleischmann grabbed an assist for Anaheim, but he only received 13:00 TOI. Simon Despres was more impressive with an assist, +3 rating and 20+ minutes of ice time.

-- Not an awful season so far for Jakob Silfverberg, who pushed his points total to 30 in 64 games by scoring a goal and two assists last night.

-- Not too surprising to see Oliver Ekman-Larsson get a ton of time (24:29), but a bit surprising that John Moore almost hit 21 minutes. In OEL's case, I'm not sure I'd push his ice time too far, since risking injury seems even more foolish than usual at this point.

KINGS 5, OILERS 2

-- Few teams help you get back on track quite like those helpful Edmonton Oilers do, right?

-- Jeff Carter's one-handed tap-in for a shortie was quite the sight to behold. He now has 21 goals on the season.

-- Anze Kopitar generated a goal and two assists to give him 48 points on the season. Plus/minus is a garbage stat, yet even so, it's surprising to see him at -4. During the previous four seasons, he generated a combined +85 mark, including a +34 from 2013-14.

-- I was going to try to praise Justin Schultz for getting a point in two straight games ... but nah, cannot do it. To be fair, the poor guy should not get almost 26 minutes of ice time. He could really strain in the post-Jeff Petry stretch.
