The Miami Dolphins signed defensive end Antwan Applewhite to improve their depth with rookie first-round pick Dion Jordan sidelined by a shoulder injury.
Applewhite has appeared in 48 NFL games with 17 starts. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2007 and last played for the Carolina Panthers. He played in five games in 2012 and ended last season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury that kept him inactive for six consecutive weeks, ultimately forcing Carolina to make the roster move.
Applewhite has 6.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in his career.
Applewhite had 17 career sacks at San Diego State before declaring for the NFL Draft after his junior season.
Olivier Vernon and Vaughn Martin are listed as the top two left defensive ends, where Jordan has lined up, on the roster. Jordan has already been ruled out for Saturday's preseason game against the Houston Texans. Coach Joe Philbin will give his reserves extended action to gauge the team's quality depth up front.
Behind Pro Bowler Cameron Wake on the right side is 2012 undrafted free agent Derrick Shelby and Tristan Okpalaugo.
