The Miami Dolphins will release defensive end Phillip Merling soon, according to NFL.com.
UPDATE: The Dolphins made the move official this morning.
Merling, a second-round draft pick in 2008, had been a disappointment in Miami with just 3.5 career sacks and none since 2009.
His impending release continues a recent trend of failure in the second round of the draft that also includes Chad Henne, Derek Hagan, Pat White, John Beck and Matt Roth.
The report indicates that the Dolphins had also grown tired of discipline problems with Merling, who recently signed his restricted free agent tender to return to the team. However, he had not been at off-season workouts thus far.
