Dolphins fire OC Sherman

The SportsXchange

The Miami Dolphins fired offensive coordinator Mike Sherman after two seasons, the team announced Monday.

Miami's offense ranked 27th in the NFL in yards and 26th in scoring in 2013. The Dolphins averaged 19.8 points per game.

Sherman came under scrutiny for his play-calling. The Dolphins also scored just seven points in their final eight quarters of the season in losses to the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.

Head coach Joe Philbin's job is reportedly safe.

"I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins," Philbin said in a statement. "Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization, I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future."

Sherman was hired in 2012 in part because of his relationship with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Sherman recruited him when he coached at Texas A&M.
