Dolphins dial body clocks ahead on short week

Sean Smith's body was telling him one thing, but the team's schedule was saying another.

"What's today right now? Monday?" Smith said. "Feels like its Wednesday."

The Dolphins cornerback and his teammates had just completed their film breakdown, a correction session, installation period and walk-through. Everything the Dolphins did over a two-day period was crammed into one practice on Monday because of the team's Thursday night road game against the Buffalo Bills.

On Tuesday, instead of the off day many Dolphins use to get massages, chiropractic adjustments and rest and relaxation, they practiced.

"It was a combination of a Wednesday and a Friday," left guard Richie Incognito said of the session. "Everything is flying by so fast."

And if you thought the installation was difficult, just imagine how their bodies will feel come game night.

Center Mike Pouncey admitted his body usually doesn't heal up until Friday or Saturday on a normal week.

"Nobody is complaining," said Pouncey, who pointed out the coaches are encouraging players to get as much rest as possible. "This is football. It is what we love to do. We're playing a game."

According to head coach Joe Philbin the team's plan is to keep it simple on Thursday night. This week they've focused on the fundamentals and he's instructed all his coaches to take out any plays they aren't 100 percent comfortable with.

"On a short week you're always careful of how much is the right amount of work," Philbin said.

Only four times in the past one and a half seasons has a road team been able to pull off a victory in a Thursday night game.

Both the Dolphins and Bills are coming off of tough losses on Sunday with no time to stew in their misery.

"It's going to really come down to just Football 101," tailback Reggie Bush said. "Doing the basic things right and making sure we're fundamentally sound."
