Dodgers reliever Elbert had appendectomy

The SportsXchange

Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed reliever Scott Elbert revealed Sunday that he had his appendix removed on Jan. 28.

Elbert was expected to miss the first two months of the season because he is still recovering from Tommy John surgery. The appendectomy further delays his rehab by a few more weeks.

"It didn't burst, but it was going to," Elbert told SB Nation's True Blue LA. "It was hurting for a couple days and I didn't know what it was; I thought it was the flu virus."

Elbert, 28, had a 2.32 ERA and struck out 8.6 batters per nine innings over 90 appearances for the Dodgers from 2011-12. He missed all of last season due to elbow problems.

He was placed on the 60-day disabled list Saturday to make room for newly-signed left-hander Paul Maholm.
