Dodgers place Kemp on DL

The SportsXchange

The Los Angeles Dodgers believed two days of rest would be enough for center fielder Matt Kemp to return to the lineup Monday.

The plan proved overly optimistic, however, as Kemp was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday prior to the Dodgers' series opener against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Kemp irritated the AC joint in his left shoulder during Friday's game in San Francisco, and he sat out the last two games of the weekend series against the Giants.

Kemp's absence prevents manager Don Mattingly from having to shuffle four outfielders between three positions. Carl Crawford came off the DL on Friday, returning to an outfield that includes mainstays Kemp and Andre Ethier in addition to rookie phenom Yasiel Puig.

With Kemp out, Ethier likely will continue to man center field, with Crawford in left and Puig in right.

To replace Kemp on the roster, the Dodgers recalled outfielder Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque. Van Slyke was optioned to the minors Friday when Crawford returned, having hit .236 with six homers and 13 RBIs in 27 games (80 at-bats) for Los Angeles.

The Dodgers also placed right-hander Stephen Fife on the 15-day DL due to right shoulder bursitis. Fife is 3-3 with a 2.76 ERA through eight starts. His removal clears a roster spot for newly acquired right-hander Ricky Nolasco, who is expected to make his Dodgers debut in Arizona on Tuesday. Nolasco came from the Marlins last weekend in a trade that sent three minor league pitchers to Miami.

With Fife out, Chris Capuano's brief banishment to the bullpen will end. Capuano will start Thursday against the Colorado Rockies in Dodger Stadium.
