The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed outfielder Mike Baxter off waivers from the New York Mets and designated outfielder Alex Castellanos for assignment on Thursday, the team announced.
Baxter batted just .189 with no home runs and four RBIs in 155 plate appearances with the Mets this year. The highlight of his season was crashing into the left-field wall for a catch that saved a no-hit bid for Mets left-hander Johan Santana on June 1.
The 28-year-old played in 89 games for the Mets in 2012 and hit .263 with three homers and 17 RBIs.
Castellanos, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in the deal for Rafael Furcal in 2011, played in eight games for the Dodgers this season and batted .167 with one home run and one RBI. In 105 games with triple-A Albuquerque, he hit .257 with 19 homers and 61 RBIs.
