Dodgers give League a three-year deal
Right-hander Brandon League finished last season as the Los Angeles Dodgers' closer, and he'll have the opportunity to retain that job moving forward.
League signed a three-year, $22.5 million deal with the team Tuesday, and the team also holds an option for 2016, according to MLB.com. League would have been eligible for free agency this winter.
"We think, after what he did, closer is the role," general manager Ned Colletti said, MLB.com reported. "That's what he was in Seattle in 2011 and part of 2012. We acquired him and the last few weeks, obviously he was very, very solid. So that's where we start."
League arrived in Los Angeles in a late-July trade that sent two minor-leaguers, outfielder Logan Bawcom and right-handed pitcher Leon Landry, to the Seattle Mariners. In 28 appearances for the Dodgers, League went 6-for-6 in save chances while posting a 2-1 record and a 2.30 ERA.
He lost the closer job in Seattle in May, and he finished 9-for-15 in save opportunities for the Mariners. League was 0-5 with a 3.63 ERA in 46 games with the Mariners this year.
League, 29, has played nine major league seasons, the first six with the Toronto Blue Jays. He has 60 career saves and a 19-28 record with a 3.60 ERA in 377 appearances, all in relief.
The Dodgers also used right-handers Kenley Jansen (25 saves) and Javy Guerra (eight saves) in the closer role this year.
