Dodgers OF Kemp has shoulder surgery

The SportsXchange

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp had surgery on his left shoulder Friday but should be ready by Opening Day, according to ESPN Los Angeles.

Kemp had a one-hour procedure in Los Angeles to repair a labrum tear and some minor damage to the rotator cuff, the Dodgers said.

He will start physical therapy in a week or so and is expected to start swinging a bat at the start of the calendar year. The Dodgers' season opener is April 1 against the San Francisco Giants.

The injury occurred when he collided into the outfield wall at the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 28. He continued to play but struggled, batting .218 with a .427 slugging percentage down the stretch. For the year, Kemp hit .303 with 23 home runs and 69 RBI in 403 at-bats.

Kemp said he will not be able to play in the World Baseball Classic next spring.

"I think we can throw that out the window," he said.
