Dodgers' Kemp set for shoulder surgery

The SportsXchange

Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp, previously shut down for the postseason due to a left ankle injury, was scheduled to have left shoulder surgery Tuesday, according to the team.

Kemp missed more than half of the regular season due to hamstring and ankle problems. However, now that he knows he will not play again this year, he will address arthritic changes in his left shoulder's AC joint, unrelated to his major left shoulder surgery in October 2012.

Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache was set to perform the surgery, which will require a six- to eight-week rehab. Kemp is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

According to MLB.com, Kemp might also undergo offseason surgery on his left ankle.

In 73 games this year, Kemp hit .270 with a .328 on-base percentage, a .395 slugging percentage, six homers, 33 RBIs and nine stolen bases. He was an All-Star the previous two seasons, and he finished second in National League MVP voting in 2011.

With Kemp off the roster and Andre Ethier limited to pinch-hitting due to an ankle injury, Skip Schumaker played center field for the Dodgers in their National League Division Series win over the Atlanta Braves. Ethier remains optimistic he can return to center field in the National League Championship Series, which begins Friday. The Dodgers will play either the St. Louis Cardinals or the Pittsburgh Pirates.
