Dodgers' Kemp out for postseason

The SportsXchange

The Los Angeles Dodgers learned on Sunday that outfielder Matt Kemp is finished for the year and won't be available for the postseason.

An MRI on Kemp's left ankle revealed significant swelling and weakening in the bone, according to Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache, reported.

The team decided Kemp could do further damage by playing on the injury.Kemp was told that his left ankle is so fragile he risks breaking it if he continues to push it.

"My season is over," Kemp said after Sunday's game. "This season is like a nightmare."

Kemp, the runner-up to Ryan Braun in the 2011 National League MVP race, spent the majority of this season on the disabled list.

He returned to action on Sept. 16 and played in 11 games after that. Kemp's most recent game was Friday, and he did not play in either game Saturday or Sunday.

Kemp finished the year batting .270 with six homers.

Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier also is dealing with a left ankle injury and unlikely to be available to play the outfield in the first round of the playoffs. The Dodgers open the NLDS in Atlanta Thursday.

Without Kemp or Ethier, the Dodgers are expected to give more playing time to utility man Skip Schumaker.
