The son of a Los Angeles Dodgers security guard was stabbed during a confrontation after a game against the Giants on Wednesday night in San Francisco.

Johnathan Denver, 24, of Fort Bragg, Calif., was walking with his father, brother and two others near AT&T Park when an exchange of words with a group of Giants fans outside a bar escalated into an altercation about 90 minutes after the game, San Francisco Police said.

"There is no rational explanation for this senseless act," the Dodgers said in a statement. "The pain that this has caused his family and friends is unimaginable."

Two suspects are in custody, police said. The attackers did not attend the game, which the Giants won 6-4.

"One of the suspects that was in custody has made incriminating statements and will be charged with Mr. Denver's homicide," San Francisco Police chief Greg Suhr said. "We're still continuing the investigation in regards to what will happen the other suspect that's in custody."

The names of the suspects were not released.

Denver, his relatives and friends had met at the game but left in the eighth inning and went to a bar. After they exited the nightclub, a first fight broke out that ended without injuries. Then a second altercation took place that resulted in Denver's death.

"Obviously, this is one of the most storied rivalries in baseball. That said, and I'm a big Giants fan, there is no place at these games for violence," Suhr said. "Nobody's life should be at stake whether they are at the game, leaving the game, whether it's six blocks away and an hour and a half after the game."

The Giants planned a moment of silence at Thursday night's game. The team said security was increased around the ballpark as a precaution.

"While details are still emerging, we want to be clear that there is absolutely no place in our community for this type of senseless violence," the Giants said in a statement.
