Dodger Stadium hosting outdoor NHL game

The SportsXchange

The NHL will play its first outdoor game west of the Mississippi River on Jan. 25 when the Los Angeles Kings host the Anaheim Ducks at Dodger Stadium.

Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky and longtime Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully are expected to be in attendance and honored at the game.

Gretzky was also expected to be at Dodger Stadium on Monday when the necessary equipment to make an outdoor hockey game possible arrives.

"Wayne started it all, and in many respects not to have Wayne at this event would be almost unimaginable," NHL chief operating officer John Collins told the Los Angeles Times. "It's almost a valentine to him and everything that he accomplished."

The atmosphere will be much different than outdoor games played in the Midwest and East. Instead of snow, palm trees and a beach volleyball court are expected to be near the rink.

The event also marks a return to the game for Gretzky. The former King has not been involved with the NHL for four years because of a legal dispute with the league when the owner of the team he coached, the Phoenix Coyotes, went bankrupt.
