The Green Bay Packers have added eight players to their practice squad for the 2012-13 NFL season. Diondre Borel and Andrew Datko are amongst the biggest names who have been added to this unit. The biggest storyline is that the Packers have kept three offensive linemen. This makes it look as though they'll try to survive with seven offensive linemen while Derek Sherrod is unavailable.
As of September 3, here is their practice squad.
B.J. Coleman (QB)
Marc Tyler (RB)
Diondre Borel (WR)
Brandon Bostick (TE)
Andrew Datko (OL)
Greg Van Roten (OL)
Chris Scott (OL)
Lawrence Guy (DL)
Three Offensive Linemen
By waltzing into Week 1 with seven offensive linemen, the Packers are taking a risk. Their only reserve offensive linemen are Evan Dietrich-Smith and Don Barclay. Barclay is an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia University. Derek Sherrod will begin the season on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).
By signing three offensive linemen to the practice squad, the Packers seem content with those numbers. General manager Ted Thompson is known for having peculiar roster numbers. In past seasons, the Packers have kept five tight ends or three fullbacks.
One Defensive Player
The Packers kept one defensive player on their practice squad. Lawrence Guy was a seventh-round draft pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Guy spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve. Guy is trying to make the transition to 3-4 defensive end.
The Packers entered training camp with four wide receivers who were trying to win a roster spot. Those players were Tori Gurley, Jarrett Boykins, Diondre Borel and Dale Moss. Gurley and Borel had spent the entire 2011 season on the practice squad.
The Packers were fortunate enough to keep two of those four wide receivers. Boykins was kept on the 53-man roster. Borel re-joined the practice squad. Gurley joined the practice squad of the Minnesota Vikings. Moss was reportedly going to join the practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
At any point of any game, I just hope the Packers don't have a string of injuries with their offensive linemen. The Packers' offensive linemen tend to miss their fair share of playing time. I'm guessing that a defensive lineman would be used as an emergency on the offensive line.
Sherrod won't be eligible to return until Week 7. Datko will probably have a short stint on the practice squad. I just can't see them staying with those totals for six weeks. Injuries are bound to happen.
The rest of the squad looks fine. Expect some re-shuffling throughout the season. Maybe the Packers will try to put Brandian Ross back on there after Week 1? They'll have to make room for Erik Walden.
