Digne: Champions League play was decider between joining PSG, Monaco

Lucas Digne has revealed the promise of Champions League football this season was among the factors which led to him choosing Paris Saint-Germain over Monaco.

The 19-year-old completed a 15 million euro move to the French capital last week from Lille, signing a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 winner. Les Parisiens faced stiff competition for the youngster in the form of Monaco and manager Claudio Ranieri, though, who was equally keen on capturing the France Under-20 international.

Digne says the allure of Europe's elite competition, coupled with the phonecalls he received from the club's hierarchy was enough to make him choose Parc de Princes over Stade Louis II.

"The fact that the club are already French champions was definitely a plus, and so is the prospect of playing in the Champions League next season," Digne told L'Equipe. "I did not need to be reassured, but I received personal calls from [former sporting director] Leonardo and [coach] Laurent Blanc and that weighed in my decision."

Digne says he will thrive on competing with fellow left back Maxwell for a starting berth with the French giant this campaign.

"He is a great player with a lot of experience. I can learn a lot of things from him. He is a very nice professional," Digne said.
