Everyone will have one. A player that, when you examine the postmortem of your favorite team, will have emerged as a building block for coming seasons. The Redskins might have just that in Matt Ioannidis.

Earlier this week I posted a story on how Ioannidis is a player that GM Scot McCloughan is very high on. And based on a piece in bleacher report, word is he may be one of those “hidden gems” in 2016.

What some are beginning to discover, and will no doubt keep an eye on throughout the season, is how incredibly versatile Ioannidis can be.

McCloughan is quoted in the piece per Rob Rang of CBSSports.com: “In base, we’re looking at him more at nose, but he can still play the three [technique]. But in sub, which we’re in a lot more than base, he can move around the line.

He’d also add, “The thing about him too, again, he’s not the prettiest, he’s not the best athlete, but he’s a football player. You know what, he’s a tough son of a gun that I respect a lot.”

The Redskins were in serious need of help for their run defense. Even if Ioannides has only a rotational role in 2016, he’ll still have a positive impact on the D-line. As a 6’3″, 299-pound space-eater, he can fill multiple roles in Washington’s defensive front. And that will go a long way.

This is a player that really defines what General Manager Scot McCloughan wants to fill the Redskins roster with. Someone who fits a piece of the larger puzzle in Washington.

As far as gems go, finding this one in the fifth round will prove big dividends in seasons to come.
