Diamondbacks put Putz on disabled list

J.J. Putz threw four pitches on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers before leaving the game with elbow discomfort. On Wednesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks put their closer on the 15-day disabled list and the prognosis does not look promising.

ESPN's Buster Olney tweeted: All signs point to J.J. Putz need a major elbow operation; at the very least, he'll be out a long time.

Putz told the Arizona Republic he felt tightness in his elbow and tingling in his arm down to his fingers.

Three-time All-Star Heath Bell will take over the role as closer for the Diamondbacks. The 35-year-old Bell has made 14 appearances this year and has a 4.73 ERA.

To replace the 36-year-old Putz on the active roster, Arizona called up 28-year-old right-handed reliever Will Harris from Triple-A Reno.
