Diamondbacks acquire closer Addison Reed from White Sox

The Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday acquired 24-year-old right-hander Addison Reed, who had 40 saves last season for the Chicago White Sox.

In return, the White Sox received 22-year-old Matt Davidson, who projects as the team's opening day third baseman.

Reed, who has 69 saves in 81 save opportunities over two full seasons in Chicago, figures to become the regular closer for the Diamondbacks. He'd replace Brad Ziegler, who had replaced the injured J.J. Putz. Reed will be arbitration eligible next winter, so comes to the Diamondbacks, whose bullpen was at times problematic in 2013, as both capable and affordable.

The 35th overall pick in the 2009 draft, Davidson made his major-league debut in August and batted .237 in 31 games. Prior to that, in 115 games in the Pacific Coast League, Davidson batted .280 with 17 home runs and a .350 on-base percentage.

Davidson was by most estimations the Diamondbacks' second-best prospect, behind power right-hander Archie Bradley.

He is likely to become the regular third baseman for the White Sox, who made do at the position last season with Conor Gillaspie and Jeff Keppinger. As a result, only the New York Yankees had a lower OPS from their third basemen among American League teams.

Last week, the Diamondbacks and White Sox connected as part of a three-way trade with the Los Angeles Angels, with the White Sox receiving Diamondbacks center fielder Adam Eaton. The Diamondbacks acquired the Angels' Mark Trumbo, who will play left field. That left third base to Martin Prado, making Davidson available.

Meantime, even with the loss of Reed, the White Sox continue to become younger under GM Rick Hahn's rebuild. In recent months, they also have acquired outfielder Avisail Garcia and first baseman/DH Jose Dariel Abreu.
