PHOENIX -- Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer to move into a tie for the National League lead and Trevor Cahill remained undefeated in 10 career starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2-1 victory Monday at Chase Field
Goldschmidt gave the D-backs a 2-0 lead in the first inning with his 33rd homer of the season, and Cahill and three relievers limited the reeling Dodgers to four hits.
Brad Ziegler gave up singles to Michael Young and Skip Schumaker to open the ninth inning but struck out pinch-hitter Matt Kemp for his 11th save
The Dodgers (86-64) have lost nine of their last 12 games, and their magic number to clinch the NL West title remained at four.
Goldschmidt has 13 hits in his last 24 at-bats to enhance his NL MVP resume. He leads the NL with 116 RBIs and is tied with Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez for the home run lead.
Cahill (7-10) gave up two hits in 5 1/3 innings to run his career record to 6-0 against the Dodgers as the D-backs (76-73) won their third straight with their major league-high 32nd one-run victory.
Goldschmidt has been particularly hard on the Dodgers this season, going 26-for-69, with five homers and 18 RBIs against the Dodgers. He tied San Francisco's Hunter Pence and Colorado's Michael Cuddyer for the most RBIs against the Dodgers this year.
Yasiel Puig drove in the Dodgers' run with a bases-loaded walk with one out in the sixth inning off Cahill, but reliever Josh Collmenter retired A.J. Ellis and Schumaker to get out of the inning.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (13-7) gave up two hits and struck out four in his second complete game. He retired 19 straight batters after Goldschmidt's homer before Aaron Hill singled with two outs in the seventh inning. He retired 23 of the final 24 batters he faced.
D-backs leadoff man A.J. Pollock walked on a seven-pitch at-bat in the last of the first inning, and after an fly out, Goldschmidt hit the first pitch he saw for a homer to give Arizona a 2-0 lead.
The Dodgers got one runner as far as second base in the first five innings against Cahill, and that was in the first inning when Nick Punto singled and went to second on a groundout. Puig walked with two outs, and Cahill got Ellis to ground out to end the inning.
NOTES: Kemp was activated from the disabled list before the game after missing the eight weeks with an ankle injury. Kemp, hitting .263 with five homers and 27 RBIs, will be used only as a pinch-hitter in the early stages of his return, manager Don Mattingly said. Kemp has played only 62 games this season and has been on the disabled list three times this season. He previously was sidelined by hamstring and shoulder injuries. ... Arizona activated RHP J.J. Putz from the disabled list before the game. Putz, 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA, missed 3 1/2 weeks with a dislocated right pinkie after attempting to field a ground ball with his bare hand in Philadelphia on Aug. 23. ... OF Andre Ethier (ankle), OF Carl Crawford (back) and SS Hanley Ramirez (back) also were held out of the Dodgers' lineup, although Puig was back after being held out of the starting lineup the previous two games.
