Bears WR Devin Thomas has told the team that he is stepping away from the game.

Thomas, 25, tweeted Sunday that he is retiring. "God has blessed me [with] achieving a childhood dream," he said. "I want to give back to my hometown and coach/ mentor kids so they can reach their own."

A second-round pick of the Redskins in 2008, Thomas never developed into a big-time receiver worthy of his draft position, totaling 43 catches for 482 yards and three touchdowns in 55 career games. However, he did become a strong special-teams player, especially last season with the Super Bowl-champion Giants.

His two fumble recoveries on special teams sparked the Giants to a 20-17 overtime victory at San Francisco in the NFC championship game last January. The second fumble recovery set up Lawrence Tynes' game-winning field goal in overtime.

He signed a one-year deal with the Bears this past offseason. However, Chicago added WRs Brandon Marshall and Eric Weems in free agency and drafted Alshon Jeffery, so Thomas' spot on the final roster was not assured.
