NEWARK, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils turned a laugher into a nail-biter, but still found a way to keep their playoff hopes alive.

After jumping to a 3-0 lead, the Devils let the lowly Florida Panthers claw back into the game before surviving with a 6-3 victory Monday night at Prudential Center.

Center Travis Zajac had a hat trick while left winger Ryane Clowe, right winger Jaromir Jagr and center Jacob Josefson scored for the Devils, who moved to within three points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jagr had three assists while Clowe, who left the game in the second period and did not return with what appeared to be a head injury, had two assists.

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur was replaced midway through the second period after allowing three goals on nine shots. Cory Schneider took over and made 14 saves to preserve the win for Brodeur.

Defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, right winger Brad Boyes and center Brandon Pirri scored for the Panthers. Goaltender Dan Ellis made 26 saves.

The Devils bombarded the Panthers early, scoring three goals in the first 11:33 of the first period, including two goals from Zajac. The Devils were awarded a four-minute power play with 4:16 remaining in the period, but a shorthanded goal by Kulikov made it 3-1 and gave the Panthers life.

It took just 50 seconds of the second period for Boyes to bring the Panthers to within 3-2, but Clowe answered less than three minutes later to restore the Devils' two-goal lead.

Three minutes later, Pirri redirected a puck that slipped past Brodeur, which ended the 41-year-old goaltender's night. He was pulled in favor of Schneider, who stopped all eight shots he faced in the second period.

The Devils put it away in the third on a shorthanded goal from Josefson at 4:02 and Zajac's third of the game at 9:37.
