NEWARK, N.J. -- Right winger Tuomo Ruutu scored the winner with 6:30 remaining in the third period as the New Jersey Devils avoided disaster in a 5-4 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night at Prudential Center.

Left winger Jeff Skinner scored first for the Hurricanes, who received goals from defenseman Jay Harrison, left winger Nathan Gerbe and right winger Alex Semin to erase a three-goal deficit before Ruutu's winner.

Left winger Adam Henrique scored his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season. Center Travis Zajac and right winger Damien Brunner also scored for the Devils.

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur made 29 saves for his third straight win.

Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin stopped 18 of 22 shots before he was pulled after Henrique's second goal. Cam Ward replaced Khudobin and made eight saves on nine shots.

The win pulled the Devils to within two points of the Detroit Red Wings for the final playoff spot in the East. The Red Wings have played two fewer games than the Devils.

Zajac's 11th goal of the season was the only scoring in the first period, but the second period had a combined five goals between the clubs.

Skinner tied the score at 1-1 when he banked a shot off Devils defenseman Mark Fayne and past Brodeur.

Brunner's 10th of the season came on a power play and gave the Devils a 2-1 lead. Henrique followed with a backhander on a breakaway that doubled the advantage.

Henrique's ninth goal in six games since returning from the Olympic break ended Khudobin's night and gave the Devils a three-goal advantage.

Harrison, Gerbe and Semin scored in succession across the second and third periods to draw the Hurricanes into a 4-4 tie late in the third period.
