I have traveled throughout various NFL stadiums, tailgating and watching football. Detroit fans are amazing. These fans have stood by their team through good and bad times. Lions fans really support their team. Just a decade old, Ford Field is an incredible stadium with state-of-the art facilities. Due to limited parking, most tailgating is centered at Eastern Market. Winning or losing season, this is where the football festivities begin!
Here is the most up-to-date information on tailgating for Lions games:
Venue: Ford Field
Location: 2000 Brush Street, Detroit, Michigan, 48226Year Opened: 2002
Playing Surface: The playing surface at Ford Field is FieldTurf.
Paid Tailgating Lots:Due to the limited amount of parking at Ford Field, Eastern Market is the Detroit Lions' main tailgating parking lot. There are also other tailgating lots in nearby Greektown. Check to make sure you can tailgate at a parking lot before paying. There are nearly 1,000 off-site tailgate parking spots.
Parking Cost: Eastern Market offers 759 parking spaces for tailgating. Cars cost $45 to park vehicles, $75 for campers and small buses. Recreational vehicles cost $130 to park, while motor coaches cost $160. There is also a shuttle to the games and that cost is $5 roundtrip, per person. A wristband is given to all shuttle users and must be worn around the wrist. The lots in Greektown can be more economical, at $10-$25 per vehicle.
Tailgating Times: Tailgating begins at Eastern Market at 8 a.m. or four hours before game time.
Reserved Spaces: Tailgating spaces are available to reserve with a corporate package. Call 313.833.9300 for questions and to make a reservation.
Grilling and Fire Rules: Grilling is allowed. Both propane and charcoal are allowed. Charcoal must be safely removed and tailgaters are responsible for not leaving any coals on the ground. No flames or wood fires are allowed. All hot coals must be disposed at the site bins.
Alcoholic Beverages: Alcoholic beverages are allowed for consumption for anyone of the legal age to drink alcohol. Underaged drinking is prohibited.
Personal-Experience Parking and Tailgating Tips: The people in Detroit love to tailgate, but unlike other cities, the groups are smaller. We were there a bit after the 8 a.m. opening time and we were the only ones there for nearly 45 minutes. Eastern Market offers a way to dispose of trash and charcoal, as well as bathrooms, but many of the lots in other areas do not provide containers for charcoal and garbage, nor are there bathrooms. Also, throwing around a football is prohibited. We stuck to chatting with the smattering of fans. I found that the Detroit Lions fans were the friendliest in the NFL!
