MONTREAL (AP) Two-time Olympic diving silver medalist Alexandre Despatie is recovering well after cutting his head in a training accident this week in Spain.
He was preparing for this weekend's Madrid Grand Prix when his head struck the springboard on Tuesday, suffering a 10-centimeter cut below the hairline. He underwent surgery the following morning.
The medical team said the scar was healing well and there has been no sign of infection, according to a statement released by Diving Canada on Friday.
Neurological tests showed Despatie was not concussed, the statement added.
Despatie is expected to return home shortly, but it will be at least three weeks before he can start training again.
He's still hopeful that he'll be able to compete at the London Olympics.
Despatie was performing an inward three-and-a-half dive when he lost his balance upon takeoff. His head hit the end of the springboard.
