DeSean Jackson: the cost of doing business in the NFL

Say what you want about DeSean Jackson, just don’t say he’s “all in” on being a member of the Washington Redskins during the offseason.

Sure, both sides say the right thing. Here is a sample in a story filed by ESPN: Jay Gruden – “He has been here, he has popped in and had a cup of coffee”. Also Gruden – “Last time I looked up the word ‘voluntary,’ that is his choice, and he has been in the league nine years. He knows what type of shape he has to come in.

He would add, “Obviously, last year he pulled his hamstring, and some people say it was because he was out of shape, but he wasn’t really. But he will be ready to go and probably show up next week. Or it could be whenever.”

Kirk Cousins on Jackson: “DeSean will get here”, adding, He was here the last few weeks and was able to work with us. He knows what’s best for him and what he’s gotta do to be ready this fall. I’m excited for whenever he does get here and expect to get a lot of work.

DeAngelo Hall – “Yes, you want him here, but this is an offense he knows, and he knows himself“, adding, “When you have a guy that knows [himself], you kind of what them to train the way they want to train.

DeSean Jackson is going to do as DeSean Jackson wants to do.

Such is the deal with players like Jackson.

If a workout bonus of $500,000.00 isn’t going to move the needle for him, then what does?

The 29 year old has a salary of $3.75 million this season and is a free agent after 2016. In 2014, the Redskins gave him a $5 million dollar signing bonus.

Jackson isn’t a ‘total’ no-show at the voluntary sessions, and head coach Jay Gruden expects him to show up at some point.

DeSean was “spotty” in his attendance in 2015. The attitude from the Redskins was that if he made plays in the regular season, that the off-season attendance just wasn’t a big deal to the team.

His season numbers; 30 catches for 528 yards and four touchdowns.

As a fan, you can decide for yourself whether DeSean Jackson is a guy who should be here after this season. However, given the type of player Scot McCloughan has gravitated towards, and speaks of having on this team, is he that type of guy.

Seeing as he may be in line for one more big contract in his career, 2016 could be important for him.

Unfortunately, the little stuff doesn’t seem to matter much to him, in a year when maybe it should.

Perhaps his next deal will reflect as such.
