Dennard convicted of felony assault on officer

New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard has been convicted of third-degree felony assault on a police officer, according to Lori Pilger of the Lincoln Journal-Star.

Dennard could face up to six years in prison for the conviction. He also was convicted of the misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest, but was acquitted of a charge of assaulting another man.

Dennard had been charged following an incident outside a bar in Lincoln, Neb., in which he hit a police officer in the jaw shortly before the 2012 draft.

Dennard, who starred at the University of Nebraska, had been originally projected as a possible second or third-round pick, plummeted to the seventh round where the Patriots selected him last April.
