Demetrius Johnson is Chasing Anderson Silva and UFC History

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has his eyes set on making history. “Mighty Mouse” is determined to break former middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva's record of the most successful title defenses.

Silva held the 185-pound title for seven years and successfully defended it 10 consecutive times. Johnson retained his belt for the eighth time at UFC 197, defeating the previously unbeaten Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo in the first round.

“I just want to make sure – my biggest goal right now is to break that title defense of Anderson Silva, and I believe I can do it. So for me to go off and detour on a different route, it’s going to have to make me really want to do it,” Johnson said during the UFC 197 post-fight press conference.

Johnson has literally cleared out the 125-pound division, and some would like to see the 29-year-old move up and challenge champion Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title. The two have fought for the 135-pound belt before. Cruz defeated Johnson by unanimous decision in October 2011.

While Johnson is set out to do what's never been done before, he's not totally opposed to a Cruz rematch.

“I’ve never shied away from that fight with Cruz,” said Johnson. “I’ve fought at 135 before… I’m not afraid of that fight.”
