Sophomore guard Tahj Tate came off the bench to make some big baskets, helping Delaware State rally for a 52-50 victory over Morgan State on Monday at Memorial Hall in Dover, Del.
Tate finished with a team-high 12 points for Delaware State (12-13, 7-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Senior forward Marques Oliver added 11 points for the Hornets, and junior guard Casey Walker had 10.
Senior forward Dewayne Jackson and junior swingman Justin Black scored 10 points apiece for Morgan State (9-14, 6-6).
Morgan State mounted an 11-0 run to take a 26-10 lead with 5:26 to play in the first half. Sophomore forward Shaquille Duncan sparked the run, making a jumper before throwing down two dunks.
Morgan State held a 29-18 lead at the break and extended its advantage on a 3-pointer by Jackson early in the second half, but Delaware State began to chip away. The Hornets cut the lead to single digits on a jumper by Tate with 13:51 remaining and tied the game at 36-36 when Walker dunked with 11:49 to play.
Black stopped Delaware State's surge with back-to-back 3-pointers to put Morgan State up 44-38 with 8:47 left, but the Hornets rallied twice more to go up 46-45 and 51-50, both times on baskets by Tate.
