Definitive Spread Picks for the NFL Championship Round

Welcome, welcome, welcome to another feeble attempt at NFL handicapping by yours truly. We had one hell of a week in the NFL Divisional Round, going 4-0 against the spread, so we are back with another hopeful week of winners. The NFL Championship weekend is one of my favorite football weekends of the year and we are blessed with two terrific match-ups in 2017. Let’s jump right into it:

Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons (-5)

I’m going to preface this by saying that the NFC game is way more difficult to handicap than the AFC game. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has been nothing short of amazing since Week 6, while Falcons QB Matt Ryan will likely be voted MVP in the coming weeks. Both quarterbacks have scored points in abundance on some of the league’s best defenses, and Sunday will likely be no different. Both teams have been so hot offensively that it’s tough to predict a winner with any level of confidence.

But since there’s only three football games left on the schedule, we are going to make a pick. I’m going to side with Green Bay and the points. I could easily see this game being decided on the final possession, so getting five points seems like the most logical play. I think Atlanta will ultimately win, but it’s going to be very close. Green Bay +5.

Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots (-6)

Not surprisingly, New England is going to be a heavy public side. Patriots, playing at home, in a ‘revenge’ spot. That’s a recipe for public backing.

Although Pittsburgh won by two points last week against Kansas City, they simply dominated that game. If it wasn’t for six faltered drives in the red-zone, Pittsburgh could have won by 21+ points. Almost every offensive drive resulted in Pittsburgh marching down the field with relative ease against a Kansas City defense that ranks as one of the better units across the league. New England, while playing much better defensively, will have a tough time slowing down one of the league’s best all-around offenses.

I’m going to side with Pittsburgh here. I feel like six points is way too much in this spot, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers win this game outright. New England’s offense really looked sub-par last week and they cannot afford another stinker against a Pittsburgh offense that is simply too talented to completely stop.
