Buzzing on Yahoo Sports:

Defensive gems can't overcome Oakland's lack of offense

The SportsXchange

Oakland made two errors on Tuesday night, but defense was the best part of the A's game.

Shortstop Cliff Pennington made two terrific plays in the Athletics' 5-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, one in the hole and the other up the middle. Third baseman Josh Donaldson made two sensational plays, one of which might show up in end-of-season highlight reels.

Donaldson ranged far to his left in the fifth inning, cutting in front of Pennington and plunging for a sharp grounder by Maicer Izturis. The ball rolled free as he landed, and he picked it up while still seated and made a strong, accurate throw from his rear to get Izturis.

In the ninth, Donaldson raced to his right for a bouncer by Mark Trumbo, his momentum carried him past the bag, and he made another excellent throw for the out.

Donaldson, converted from catcher when Scott Sizemore injured his knee at the start of spring training, also made an error in the seventh that led to an unearned run.

He is now filling in while Brandon Inge is on the disabled list with a groin strain; Inge is expected back early next week.

Donaldson has yet to draw a walk in 67 at-bats, the most at-bats by a major-leaguer without a walk this season. He went 0-for-3, dropping his average to .134.

He wasn't alone in offensive futility Tuesday, as the A's managed just one hit off the Angels' C.J. Wilson and Ernesto Frieri.
