MLB suspends eight after D'backs-Dodgers brawl

The SportsXchange

Major League Baseball suspended eight players, managers and coaches, and fined four others for their roles in Tuesday's brawl between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The disciplines were announced Friday.

Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy was suspended 10 games for intentionally throwing at the head of Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke in the bottom of the seventh inning, after a warning had been issued to both teams earlier in the game.

D'backs infielder Eric Hinske was suspended five games for leaving the dugout and for aggressive actions during the incidents.

Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell, infielder/outfielder Skip Schumaker and hitting coach Mark McGwire were suspended two games.

Dodgers pitcher Ronald Belisario and manager Don Mattingly received a one-game suspensions.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson was suspended one game "for the intentional actions of Kennedy after a warning had been issued."

The players, coaches and managers were also fined undisclosed amounts.

Greinke, Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero and Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra were also fined.

The players can appeal the suspensions.

Mattingly and Gibson are scheduled to serve their suspensions Friday. The Dodgers play at the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Diamondbacks are at the San Diego Padres.

McGwire is scheduled to serve his suspension Friday and Saturday.

The Dodgers were fined for allowing players currently on the disabled list to leave the dugout and enter the field during the brawl, which violates league rules.

Both teams are barred from allowing players on the DL to sit in the dugout until Monday for the Diamondbacks and Tuesday for the Dodgers.

The teams traded bean balls and punches after Puig was drilled by a pitch from Kennedy in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday.

The Dodgers retaliated when Greinke plucked Montero in the seventh, emptying both dugouts and bullpens. The situation quickly settled down and peace was restored without any fisticuffs.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Kennedy nailed Greinke, which prompted a wild melee in which players squared off against players, coaches squared off against coaches, and Mattingly and Gibson were right in the middle of it.

McGwire also tangled with Diamondbacks coach Matt Williams, and Dodgers pitchers Josh Beckett and Chris Capuano violated a league rule by leaving the dugout while on the disabled list.

Puig and Belisario were ejected from the game.
