On the second April Friday of this Strange Year of our Lord 2017, David Villa found himself trending on Twitter at night.

And why wouldn’t a 35-year-old Spanish striker who is almost three years removed from his final appearance for the Spain national team or Atletico Madrid, when he’s still doing things like this?

Villa’s Eastern Conference leaders New York City FC were at the troubled, winless and last-placed Philadelphia Union, holding on to a 1-0 89th-minute lead, courtesy of the 20-year-old English sensation Jack Harrison – on a wonderful assist from Ronald Matarrita.

The Union, in search of a late point – which would have been just their third from six games – reasonably sent numbers forward. But when an attack was warded off, Villa scurried after a ball played forward into the Union half and managed to muscle Jack Elliott off it as they crossed the halfway line.

That’s when Villa swept his boot through the bouncing ball and sent it soaring at Andre Blake’s goal. The Union’s Jamaican star goalkeeper was caught well in front of his line but tracked back swiftly.

Villa’s ball, however, was perfect.

It snuck in just between the 6-foot-4 goalkeeper’s outstretched arms and the crossbar to lock up the points in a 2-0 win.

And probably the Goal of the Year.
