I was hoping to have all of our Designated Players available for the Los Angeles Galaxy-Colorado Rapids game on Sept. 14. Unfortunately, David Beckham has reportedly sprained his left ankle. Now, his presence at the upcoming match is uncertain. Considering Landon Donovan is still on the mend for his hamstring strain, our team may not be at full strength.
On Sept. 11, Beckham missed training due to a sprained left ankle. The English midfielder was injured in the match against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sept. 1. Bruce Arena said the midfielder had "taken a knock" and "might be" able to play on Friday. Beckham has scored four goals and added four assists in the last six games he has played in.
Donovan Questionable too
Donovan has been out of action since August 15 when he strained his hamstring in the USMNT's victory over Mexico. While the 30-year-old played for 33 minutes in the Galaxy's Reserve League game against Portland, he is still questionable for the match against the Rapids. In the 4-0 Reserve League victory, the Galaxy captain scored one goal and added one assist. Still, Donovan noted that he felt "tired" but would be "ready for Friday."
Robbie Keane is Back
At least, Robbie Keane appears to be injury free. The Irish striker returned from International duty where he converted a penalty kick in Ireland's 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan. Keane leads the Galaxy with 11 goals scored. It would be nice to see him get to play with Donovan again up top.
Not Too Worried
In the absence of our DPs, our youth has come through in some important matches. Without most of our starters, our youngsters posted a 4-0 victory over Puerto Rico in a CCL group stage match. Jose Villarreal, Tommy Meyer, Jack McBean and Michael Stephens all scored in that game. Villarreal also lent an assist in the Galaxy's 2-0 win over FC Dallas on August 26. Stephens and Hector Jimenez are in good form. Furthermore, our "Fab Four" defense from 2011 is back. With Omar Gonzalez in the lineup, we have posted four shutouts in our last six regular season games.
Although the Rapids are in 7th place in the West and have just 29 points, we cannot underestimate this team. With or without Beckham and Donovan, I expect us to win.
