Six-time WWE world champion, Dave Batista, had a successful MMA debut, defeating Vince Lucero via TKO during the first round of their Oct. 6 bout.
The two men headlined the CES 12 fight card held at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
Lucero -- who came into the bout with 44 professional MMA fights -- came right at Batista, hitting "The Animal" with some solid hooks early in the fight. Lucero did a good job of battering Batista against the cage, but the former WWE star didn't seem to have any problems taking shots.
Referee Dan Miragliotta eventually separated both men from the clinch, and Batista speared Lucero to the ground moments later, landing in side control. Dave worked his way to Lucero's back, finishing the 300-pounder with a flurry of hooks.
After the fight both men traded heated words, as Lucero felt Batista hit the back of his head a few times. However, most of Batista's finishing shots landed cleanly.
Batista wasn't particularly impressive in his MMA debut, but he does deserve a lot of credit for taking on a veteran of the sport. Batista was originally scheduled to face Rashid Evans, but the latter was forced to pull out of the fight after getting arrested for violating his probation.
Dave's striking still needs a lot work, and I was surprised at how easy it was for Lucero to pin him against the cage. However, Batista didn't have any problems getting the fight to the ground when he wanted to, and he looked good on the canvas.
"I think my nerves got the best of me a little bit," Batista said during his post-fight interview with UFC veteran Joe Lauzon. "He hits like a [expletive] horse, he rocked me… I didn't have my legs under me coming out, I was so nervous. It took me a little bit to regain my composure because I got rocked. … I'm better than I showed tonight."
Batista also made it clear that he isn't done with MMA, and the 43 year-old plans to fight again.
